Have you ever had a job that made you cry? I had a job that I hated so much that I would literally cry at my desk. I had a job that I hated so much that I would come home from work and immediately go to sleep. When I would wake up in the morning I wouldn’t even want to go to work. I had to listen to motivational messages to get out of the bed.
Once I would get out of the bed I would barely comb my hair and I definitely didn’t match my clothes. I looked ugly every day. It didn’t matter that I was ugly though because my coworkers thought I resembled every other black woman that they had ever seen, so even if I would have made and effort…they wouldn’t have known the difference. They would walk up to me and start talking to me as if I were another black woman that I looked nothing alike.
I found myself miserable because I was spending most of my time at work. I was no good in my personal life because I was always complaining about the job. People would say just keep going but it wasn’t that simple. I was being asked to do things that were unethical and it would bother my morality.
This is my personal advice about how I got through it but it may be different for everyone.
I had gotten to a point where I didn’t trust myself. I had just come from a job where I had gotten praised and complimented everyday on how fantastic of a worker I was, and now I was in a position where my boss basically put me down every day. Eventually I thought about it and I said to myself you know what Aja…You are the same person who worked at the other job. You are the same person who goes out of your way to help others so what has changed?
Once I started to trust myself I realized that the problem wasn’t me. When I could clearly see that the problem wasn’t me I asked my boss “If I’m such an awful employee why don’t I have any write ups?” She didn’t have any answer. She didn’t have any answer because she made it all up.
Speak Up For Yourself
I let my boss know that talking down to me was not an option that she had as my superior in the working atmosphere. The option that she had was to formally reprimand me. I let her know that if she were not formally planning to reprimand me, then I would no longer be responding to her stray comments about my character.
Talk To Your Boss
Your boss has a boss. Your bosses’ boss is supposed to make sure that your boss is bossing! If you have issues feel free to take that issue right on up the ladder. There is some information that you may not be privy to, and you never know how many other people are having the same issue. Let whoever know whatever you have to
Talk To Someone
I’m sure I annoyed the hell out of my friends but they knew that I needed to talk. I was going through a hard time. If you don’t want to talk to a friend then talk to a professional. I always say talk to someone, but getting it out is so much better than keeping it in
Start Looking ASAP
Don’t wait until you hate your job to start looking for another job. Finding the right job can take some time, so give yourself the time to find a good one. As soon as you peep the work scene and see it’s some foolery going on, be about your business and start looking. If you wait too long you will find yourself miserable in and unbearable situation.
The moral of the story is that you may have more power than you think that you do. Don’t let these managers intimidate you with their “power.” You have power too. You have the power to demand a work environment that is not harmful to your mental health
